Motorcycle accident compensation calculator
Estimate what your motorbike crash injury claim could be worth — compensation (UK £) or settlement (US $) — built on published Judicial College bracket figures. Because riders are so exposed, motorcycle injuries skew more serious, and so do the payouts.

Why motorcycle claims are valued higher
Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users: in a collision there is no metal cage, crumple zone or airbag between the rider and the road. The same impact that leaves a car driver shaken can throw a rider into the carriageway, so the injuries that follow tend to be more severe — limb fractures, road rash and degloving injuries to exposed skin, and head injuries even when a helmet is worn. Compensation tracks the injury, not the vehicle, so these more serious injuries produce larger general-damages awards than a typical car claim for the same crash.
General damages — the injury itself
General damages compensate you for the pain, suffering and loss of amenity caused by the crash. In England and Wales these are valued from the Judicial College Guidelines (JCG), the standard reference for every body part and severity. For riders, the brackets that matter most are usually fractures, knee and leg injuries, head injury and scarring from road rash. Whiplash lasting up to two years is the exception — it is paid under a fixed statutory tariff. In the US there is no national table, so typical published settlement ranges are used.
Special damages — your financial losses
On top of the injury value you can recover the money you actually lost: lost earnings while you could not work, medical treatment, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, care and travel. Riders can also claim the cost of the damaged motorcycle, helmet, leathers and other protective gear, plus recovery and storage charges. Because rider injuries are often serious, future losses — ongoing care, further surgery or reduced earning capacity — frequently form a large part of the total.
Motorcycle accident compensation amounts by injury
The table below shows indicative general-damages ranges for the injuries most often seen after a motorbike crash. Special damages (lost earnings, treatment, bike and gear) are added on top. UK figures are bracket-style estimates based on the Judicial College Guidelines and the statutory whiplash tariff; US figures are typical personal-injury settlement ranges.
| Injury type | UK — Minor (£) | UK — Moderate (£) | UK — Severe (£) | US — typical ($) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broken bone / fracture | 2,800 – 12,000 | 12,000 – 45,000 | 45,000 – 135,000 | 12k – 150k |
| Knee / leg | 2,800 – 14,500 | 14,500 – 47,800 | 47,800 – 159,000 | 15k – 180k |

Who pays a motorcycle accident claim?
In most cases the compensation is paid by the at-fault driver's motor insurer. Many motorbike claims involve a car or van driver who failed to see the rider — the classic "sorry mate, I didn't see you" collision — and liability turns on that failure to look properly. If the driver who hurt you was uninsured or untraced, UK claims can be made through the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB); many US states provide uninsured/underinsured motorist cover that does the same job. Where you were partly to blame, your award can be reduced for contributory negligence.
How to use this motorcycle accident calculator
- Pick the main injury from the crash — for riders this is often a fracture, leg, head or scarring injury.
- Choose the severity that matches your medical prognosis and recovery time.
- Add any financial losses: lost earnings, treatment, and the cost of your bike and gear.
- Switch the region toggle to UK £ or US $ and read your estimated total range.
The estimate is a realistic starting point, not a quote. For a precise valuation you need a medical report and a review of your losses — see our guides on how compensation is calculated, general vs special damages and the whiplash tariff explained.
Frequently asked questions
How much compensation will I get for a motorcycle accident?
It depends on your injuries and losses, but motorcycle claims often sit higher than car claims because the injuries tend to be more serious. In England & Wales a single leg fracture is valued from the Judicial College Guidelines at roughly £2,800–£47,800, and a serious head injury can reach six figures, plus special damages such as lost earnings, treatment and the cost of your bike and gear. In the US a motorbike injury settlement commonly runs from $15,000 for a moderate fracture into the hundreds of thousands for catastrophic injury.
Why are motorbike accident payouts often higher than car accidents?
Motorcyclists have almost no protection in a collision, so the same impact that bruises a car driver can cause fractures, road rash, degloving or a head injury to a rider. Compensation tracks the injury, not the vehicle, so more severe injuries produce larger general-damages awards. Riders also often face longer recovery, more surgery and a greater impact on their ability to work, which increases special damages and future losses.
Does not wearing a helmet or protective gear affect my claim?
You can still claim if the crash was the other party's fault, but your award may be reduced for contributory negligence where the lack of a helmet or proper gear made your injuries worse. In England & Wales, courts have applied reductions where a missing or unfastened helmet contributed to head injury. Wearing approved gear protects both your safety and the full value of any claim.
What can I claim for after a motorcycle accident (including bike and gear)?
General damages for the injury (pain, suffering and loss of amenity) plus special damages for your financial losses: lost earnings, medical and rehabilitation costs, care and travel. Motorcyclists can also recover the cost of the damaged bike, helmet, leathers and other protective gear, plus recovery and storage charges. Serious injuries can add future losses such as ongoing care or reduced earning capacity.
How long do I have to claim for a motorcycle accident?
In England & Wales the general limit is three years from the accident, or from when you first knew the injury was accident-related, with different rules for children and people who lack capacity. In the US each state sets its own statute of limitations, commonly two to three years. Deadlines are strict, so check your jurisdiction early. See claim time limits.
