How soft tissue injuries are valued
A soft-tissue injury is damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments or other connective tissue rather than to bone — sprains, strains, and bruising. They are the most common injuries in road-traffic accidents, slips and trips, and minor workplace incidents. Most recover well, which is why they are usually modest claims, but where symptoms persist the value rises. In England and Wales the duration of symptoms is the single most important factor.
Minor soft-tissue injuries
A sprain or strain that causes pain and restriction for a limited period but recovers fully sits at the lower end — indicatively £1,500–£5,000. The figure reflects the discomfort, any treatment such as physiotherapy, and the inconvenience during recovery. The shorter the recovery, the lower the award.
Moderate soft-tissue injuries
Where a soft-tissue injury lasts longer — roughly one to three years — or leaves intermittent symptoms, the award is typically £5,000–£12,500. The need for ongoing physiotherapy or pain relief, and any effect on work or daily activities, push a case up this bracket.
Serious soft-tissue injuries
The most serious soft-tissue injuries — a significant tendon or ligament rupture, or damage that leaves chronic, long-term or permanent symptoms — can reach roughly £12,500–£38,000. Selecting "Severe" applies the upper figures. Note that a soft-tissue neck injury (whiplash) lasting up to two years is paid under the separate statutory whiplash tariff in the UK.
What affects a soft tissue injury payout
- Duration of symptoms — by far the biggest driver; a few weeks versus several years.
- Whether symptoms become permanent — chronic pain or lasting restriction increases the award.
- Treatment — the need for prolonged physiotherapy, injections or, rarely, surgery.
- Effect on work and daily life — particularly where the injury limits physical activity or employment.
Special damages for soft tissue injuries
Even for modest injuries you can recover your financial losses: physiotherapy and treatment costs, prescription charges, travel to appointments and any earnings lost while unable to work. For longer-lasting injuries these can be more substantial. Enter your losses in the calculator and they are added to the injury figure.
Soft tissue injury claims in practice
Many soft-tissue claims in England and Wales are low-value and handled through the Official Injury Claim portal, though those falling outside the whiplash tariff or with lasting symptoms may use a solicitor. Because soft-tissue injuries do not show clearly on scans, the medical report describing your symptoms and prognosis is especially important. This page is an estimate only and not legal advice.
Soft tissue injury compensation — frequently asked questions
How much compensation for a soft tissue injury in the UK?
A minor sprain or strain that recovers is valued at roughly £1,500–£5,000, a soft-tissue injury lasting one to three years at about £5,000–£12,500, and a serious soft-tissue injury with long-lasting or permanent symptoms up to around £12,500–£38,000. Your lost earnings and treatment costs are added as special damages.
What counts as a soft tissue injury?
A soft-tissue injury is damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments or other connective tissue rather than bone. It includes sprains (ligament damage), strains (muscle or tendon damage) and bruising. Whiplash is a soft-tissue neck injury, but in the UK it is valued under its own statutory tariff rather than the general soft-tissue brackets.
How much is a soft tissue injury settlement in the US?
US soft-tissue injury settlements range from about $3,000 for minor cases to around $110,000 for the most serious. Insurers often value soft-tissue claims by reference to medical treatment and documented losses, so the strength of your medical records, your lost income and the at-fault party's insurance limits strongly influence the figure.
Why are soft tissue claims sometimes disputed?
Because soft-tissue injuries usually do not appear on X-rays or scans, their existence and severity rest on your reported symptoms and the examining doctor's opinion. This makes contemporaneous medical records and a clear prognosis report particularly important, and is why insurers sometimes challenge the duration or seriousness of a soft-tissue claim.
Is this soft tissue injury calculator accurate?
It gives a realistic guide based on bracket figures and typical US settlement ranges, but it is not a guarantee. Soft-tissue injury values turn heavily on how long symptoms last, liability and your proven losses. Whiplash is valued separately under the UK tariff. Always confirm with a qualified solicitor or attorney.
