Ladder fall compensation in the UK depends on the injuries suffered. Falls from ladders and other heights are a leading cause of serious workplace injury and often produce back and spinal injuries, head injuries, and fractures of the wrist, ankle, hip and heel. A minor injury may be worth a few thousand pounds, while a serious fracture, head or spinal injury can be worth tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds under the Judicial College Guidelines. In the US, fall-from-height settlements commonly run from about $15,000 to several million dollars. Select your injury and severity in the calculator above.

How ladder fall claims are valued

Your compensation is the value of the injuries you suffered, plus your financial losses. A fall from a ladder transfers significant energy, so the injury mix skews towards fractures (especially wrists, ankles, heels and the spine), head injuries, and internal injuries. The calculator above lets you select your main injury and severity and applies the relevant Judicial College bracket (UK) or settlement range (US).

Common fall-from-height injuries

  • Fractures — wrists and ankles (from landing on outstretched limbs or feet), heels, hip/pelvis and spine.
  • Head and brain injuries — from striking the ground or an object on the way down.
  • Back and spinal injuries — among the most serious and high-value outcomes.
  • Soft-tissue injuries — sprains and bruising from shorter falls.

Working-at-height duties

Where the fall happened at work, the employer owes strict duties under the Work at Height Regulations 2005: to avoid work at height where possible, to plan and supervise it, to provide suitable equipment (a properly footed and inspected ladder, or a safer alternative such as a tower or platform), and to assess the risk. Ladders should only be used for short-duration, low-risk tasks. Where an unsuitable, defective or unsecured ladder, or a lack of training or supervision, caused the fall, liability is often clear. See our guide on claiming against your employer. Falls at home or in a public place may instead give an occupiers' liability or public liability claim.

Special damages for ladder falls

On top of the injury figure you can usually recover special damages — lost earnings (often substantial where fractures keep you off work for months), surgery and rehabilitation, aids and adaptations during recovery, and future losses for serious injuries. Enter your losses in the calculator and they are added on top.

Ladder fall claims in practice

Fall-from-height claims are usually handled by personal-injury solicitors on a no-win-no-fee basis. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) treats falls from height as a priority and may investigate, with findings that can support a claim. The three-year time limit applies. Ladder fall compensation calculator — frequently asked questions

How much compensation will I get for a fall from a ladder in the UK?

It depends on your injuries. A minor injury may be worth a few thousand pounds, while a serious fracture, head or spinal injury — common in falls from height — can be worth tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds under the Judicial College Guidelines, plus special damages for lost earnings, treatment and future losses.

Can I claim against my employer for a ladder fall at work?

Yes, where the employer breached the Work at Height Regulations 2005 — for example providing an unsuitable, defective or unsecured ladder, failing to consider a safer alternative, or not planning, training and supervising the work properly. Ladders should only be used for short, low-risk tasks. Employers must carry insurance for these claims.

What if I fell off a ladder at home or in a shop?

If you fell because of a hazard someone else was responsible for — for example a defective ladder you hired, or an unsafe surface in a shop or public place — you may have an occupiers' liability or public liability claim. The injury is valued in the same way; the difference is who is responsible. A fall caused solely by your own misuse of your own ladder, however, may not give a claim.

How much is a fall-from-height settlement in the US?

US fall-from-height settlements range from about $15,000 for a minor injury to several million dollars for catastrophic head, spinal or multiple-fracture injuries. Workers' compensation and, on construction sites, special scaffold-safety laws may apply. The figure depends on your state, the evidence and your losses.

Is this ladder fall calculator accurate?

It gives a realistic guide based on Judicial College bracket figures and typical US settlement ranges, but it is not a guarantee. The total depends on the injuries you select, their severity and your proven losses. Always confirm with a qualified solicitor or attorney.
