How hand injuries are valued
The hand is highly valued in compensation terms because so much daily life and work depends on grip and dexterity. Hand injuries range from a simple finger fracture to a serious crush injury or amputation of digits. In England and Wales they are valued under the Judicial College Guidelines for hand injuries, with the bracket driven by the loss of function, whether the dominant hand is affected, and the number of digits involved. This tool uses our wrist-and-hand bracket data.
Minor hand injuries
A soft-tissue injury, a single finger fracture or a laceration that heals with full or near-full function sits at the lower end — indicatively £3,800–£12,800. The award reflects pain, scarring and the recovery period.
Moderate hand injuries
Injuries leaving some permanent loss of grip or dexterity, stiffness, ongoing pain or noticeable scarring — for example a crush injury that mostly recovers, or a fracture leaving lasting weakness — are typically valued £12,800–£29,400.
Severe hand injuries
Serious crush injuries, significant loss of function, amputation of one or more fingers, or injury to the dominant hand causing permanent disability fall in the higher brackets and beyond. Selecting “Severe” applies the upper figures.
What affects a hand injury payout
- Loss of function — grip strength, fine dexterity and range of movement.
- Dominant hand — injury to your dominant hand generally attracts a higher award.
- Digits affected — the thumb is the most valuable digit; loss of multiple fingers raises the bracket.
- Scarring and work — visible scarring and the effect on manual or skilled jobs.
Special damages for hand injuries
You can recover lost earnings during recovery, surgery and hand-therapy costs, aids and adaptations, and — for serious injuries — future losses such as reduced earning capacity, especially in manual trades. Enter these in the calculator and they are added to the injury figure.
Hand Injury compensation — frequently asked questions
How much compensation for a hand injury in the UK?
A minor hand injury that recovers is valued at roughly £3,800–£12,800, a more serious one affecting grip or function at about £12,800–£29,400, and a severe hand injury higher still under the Judicial College Guidelines, plus your lost earnings and treatment costs as special damages.
Does it matter if it's my dominant hand?
Yes. An injury to your dominant hand generally attracts a higher award because the practical impact on daily life and work is greater. The thumb is also valued more highly than the other digits.
How much is a hand injury settlement in the US?
US hand injury settlements range from about $4,000 for minor cases to $150,000 or more where surgery or permanent loss of function results, depending on your state, the prognosis, your documented losses and the at-fault party's insurance limits.
Is this hand injury calculator accurate?
It gives a realistic guide from bracket figures, not a guarantee. Values depend on grip and dexterity loss, the digits affected, your dominant hand, liability and your proven losses. Always confirm with a qualified solicitor or attorney.
